Introduction

At 65, Mr. Jeffrey Ng, the owner of a transportation business, defies expectations as he routinely lifts and moves heavy objects, tasks that many people his age would tend to shy away from. His enduring stamina and impressive strength have often left customers in awe.

"While many of my peers feel exhausted or dizzy after squatting or climbing stairs, I find it easy to carry items up several flights of stairs," he explains.

The Secret to His Longevity: Jumping Fitness

So what’s his secret? Jumping fitness! This high-energy aerobics workout is performed on a mini trampoline and engages the entire body, helping to improve balance and posture while significantly reducing the risk of osteoporosis. For older adults, staying active is not just a hobby; it is crucial to maintaining health and independence as they age.

A Shift in Mindset Towards Aging

Mr. Ng believes this generation embraces aging with a more energetic perspective compared to their parents, who often slowed down considerably in their later years. Supporting this shift are modern apps like the Health Promotion Board’s Healthy 365, which provide seniors with health resources, fitness tracking tools, goal-setting features, and even access to free workout classes and workshops.

About six years ago, Mr. Ng and his wife, who is a homemaker, transitioned from Zumba classes to jumping fitness after discovering it on the Healthy 365 platform. They were eager to find a low-impact exercise that was gentle on their knees, and jumping fitness turned out to be the perfect fit.

Building Community Through Fitness

On Sundays, the couple enjoys participating in "Forever Young," a walking group they initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic with a small band of former neighbors. What began with just five members has blossomed into a community of 23 regulars, all aged in their 60s. This initiative not only promotes fitness but also combats the rising concern of social isolation among Singapore’s older population.

Fitness and social connection have always gone hand in hand for Mr. Ng. Growing up in the vibrant kampungs of Potong Pasir, he frequently played football, squash, and cycled with friends during his youth. However, as responsibilities piled on during his family life, he gradually reduced his physical activities until he rediscovered them in his mid-50s as his sons became more independent.

"Now, my wife and I relish exercising with friends while sharing tips about classes and workshops," he shared.

Fit for Adventure: The Joy of Travel

Mr. Ng recommends jumping fitness as an excellent way to bolster stamina for walking and hiking activities. "It has not only strengthened my core but also ensures I sleep soundly after each session," he adds.

The physical confidence gained from his exercise regimen has made travel even more enjoyable for Mr. Ng and his wife. They adore exploring new places, be it quick day trips to Johor Bahru or longer excursions to destinations like Sichuan, China, where they delighted in hiking through Jiuzhaigou National Park.

"If you’re not fit enough to walk properly, traveling diminishes in joy and can even dampen the spirit of those around you," he cautions. "Financial security alone isn’t enough—you also need to be physically capable to fully enjoy your adventures."

When traveling isn’t on the agenda, Mr. Ng embraces the opportunity to explore more of Singapore while attending various fitness classes. He often takes the train to neighborhoods like Yishun, Orchard, and Collyer Quay for jumping fitness and yoga sessions. "Singapore may be small, but there’s a wealth of experiences waiting to be discovered," he says with enthusiasm.

Advice for Aspiring Fitness Enthusiasts

For those apprehensive about beginning their fitness journeys, Mr. Ng advises starting small—regular walks around the neighborhood are a fantastic first step. Once individuals feel more at ease, they can seek out community classes that align with their interests and goals. "Sitting at a coffeeshop will only introduce you to coffee friends, but if you walk through the park connectors, you will eventually meet companions to exercise with," he urges.

For those hesitant to start exercising, Mr. Ng’s advice is straightforward: "Don’t wait for a doctor’s orders! By that time, it may be harder to establish a routine. Think of exercise as essential medicine or a daily supplement."

Conclusion

As the emphasis on active living and health continues to grow, the inspiring journey of Mr. Ng encourages all to embrace fitness—not just for physical well-being but for a fulfilling, adventurous life.
