Urgent Alert: iCloud Backups for iPhones on iOS 8 and Older Will Be Discontinued!
In a significant update for Apple users, the tech giant has begun notifying those operating on older software versions about an impending change that could affect your data security. Starting December 18, 2024, iCloud backups for devices running iOS 8 and earlier will cease to function and will be permanently deleted.
Apple has laid out this policy shift in a recently published support document. As devices are required to run at least iOS 9 or newer for backups, users who have not yet upgraded should act quickly to avoid losing their essential data. Up until the cut-off date, the backup service will remain operational, but come mid-December 2024, any iCloud backups existing on devices with iOS 8 or older will no longer be accessible, effectively putting your data at risk.
For those who are still pleased with their older devices, the simplest remedy is updating to iOS 9 or a more recent version. However, for users who prefer not to update their systems or cannot do so for various reasons, Apple has provided alternatives. You can manually back up your device using a Mac or PC. If you have a Mac running macOS Catalina or a later version, simply connect your iPhone and backup through Finder. Alternatively, for users with a PC or older versions of macOS, backing up is achievable through iTunes or the Apple Devices application.
Given that iOS 8 is now a decade old, this announcement shouldn't come as a shock to long-time Apple users. If you're still holding onto an old iPhone or iPad, now may be the paramount time to consider upgrading your system to ensure continued access to seamless backup services.
