Urgent Call for Peterborough Women to Prioritize Breast Cancer Screenings This October!

In a bid to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Northwest Anglia Foundation Trust (NWAFT) has made a compelling appeal to women in Peterborough to prioritize their breast cancer screenings, following a noticeable decline in attendance rates.

Breast cancer remains the most prevalent form of cancer in the UK, and the NHS provides complimentary screenings for women aged 50 to 70 every three years. However, recent statistics reveal a sobering trend; between 2023 and 2024, out of 15,454 women invited for screenings, only 11,340 attended. Alarmingly, this resulted in 125 women receiving a cancer diagnosis during that period.

Jo Greene, the Breast Screening Office Manager at Peterborough City Hospital, highlighted the critical importance of this issue. “Raising awareness about breast cancer—among women and men—is essential, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” she stated. Greene urged anyone who has received an invitation for screening to attend their appointment without delay.

According to a recent YouGov survey commissioned by Breast Cancer Now, the percentage of women who perform regular breast checks has decreased from 49% in 2022 to just 45% in 2024. Shockingly, around 11% of women reported that they do not check their breasts at all, raising concerns about early detection.

Senior breast care practitioner Nikita Copestake emphasized the simplicity and importance of self-exams. “Checking your breasts only takes a few moments. Everyone will find their unique method for examining changes, but remember to be thorough. This includes checking the entire breast area, upper chest, and armpits. If you notice any changes, consult your GP immediately, who will refer you to your local breast unit if necessary.”

To enhance accessibility, NWAFT has portable screening vehicles that visit various locations, including Stamford and Rutland Hospital, offering convenience for those unable to visit the hospital.

As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s crucial to take action. Whether it’s attending a screening appointment or performing self-examinations, every effort counts in the fight against breast cancer. Don’t delay—take these simple steps to safeguard your health and encourage others to do the same!
