Urgent Mask Guidelines Issued at Ipswich and Colchester Hospitals Amid Flu Surge

In a crucial appeal to the public, Nick Hulme, the Chief Executive of the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, has urged patients and visitors at Ipswich and Colchester Hospitals to wear face masks to combat the alarming rise in flu cases and alleviate the overwhelming pressure on the NHS.

Appearing on BBC Suffolk's breakfast program, Mr. Hulme emphasized the importance of face coverings, stating that while wearing masks is not mandatory, the trust is 'strongly recommending' it to enhance safety for both individuals and the community at large. 'It's really important we do everything we can to stop these flu numbers in their tracks,' he declared.

The situation has become urgent, as hospitals are seeing a significant influx of patients suffering from flu and other respiratory illnesses. Mr. Hulme revealed that over 65 beds have been closed across both hospitals due to proximity to patients infected with flu, COVID-19, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). These closures come at a time when hospital occupancy rates have soared, reaching an astounding 96.46% of available beds.

Reflecting on his experience visiting both hospitals on Christmas Day, Mr. Hulme noted, 'I have never seen so many patients waiting for a bed.' Traditionally, hospitals would have hundreds of empty beds on this day, but he remarked on the striking change, highlighting the detrimental effect of this year's flu season, which has arrived earlier and with greater intensity.

In addition to masks, Mr. Hulme strongly encouraged individuals eligible for a flu vaccination to take action and receive the vaccine promptly. 'Real flu is devastating and can be life-threatening,' he warned, stressing the importance of not only the flu jab but also staying updated with COVID-19 vaccinations. He hopes to see a decline in flu cases within the coming week, stating that the NHS is doing everything within its power to manage the crisis.

This plea for precaution comes as NHS England reports record demand in accident and emergency departments, and Prof Sir Stephen Powis, the national medical director, reassures the public that efforts are underway to ensure safety and provide optimal care despite the unprecedented pressures.
