SINGAPORE:

In a shocking turn of events, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has suspended the operations of Stamford Catering Services following alarming reports of food poisoning. This comes after a gastroenteritis outbreak affected 51 individuals who consumed meals catered by the company on October 12.

Authorities confirmed that while no hospitalizations were reported, the implications of such an outbreak have raised serious concerns about food safety standards in the region.

With immediate effect from October 14, the SFA has ordered a halt to Stamford Catering Services' food business, pending further investigations. As part of the suspension protocol, the caterer is mandated to conduct thorough cleaning and sanitizing of its facilities, including equipment and utensils used in food preparation.

Moreover, all food handlers at their premises must retake and successfully complete the Food Safety Course Level 1, as well as provide proof of having tested negative for foodborne pathogens before resuming their duties. The appointed food hygiene officer will also have to retake the more advanced Food Safety Course Level 3.

This is not Stamford Catering Services' first brush with controversy. Back in 2019, the same company faced scrutiny when a separate food poisoning incident impacted 52 people, leading to its food hygiene rating being downgraded to a 'C'. Investigations revealed a concerning presence of bacteria in food samples, alongside significant lapses in hygiene practices within their operations.

As the SFA and the Ministry of Health delve deeper into the current investigation, many are left questioning the overall safety of catered food in Singapore. The public is urged to stay informed and vigilant when it comes to food safety practices, especially in catering businesses.

CNA has reached out to Stamford Catering Services for comments regarding the recent suspension, but no response has yet been provided. Stay tuned for updates as this story unfolds!
