Pulau Ubin Residents Voice Unique Concerns
SINGAPORE: In a lively exchange during a recent visit, Pulau Ubin residents shared pressing issues like wildlife encounters and challenges faced by seniors to a team from the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). This visit on April 11 coincided with Pulau Ubin being integrated into the newly formed Pasir Ris-Changi Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
Meet the Melting Pot of Concerns
The PAP team, including prominent figures like Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean and seasoned politicians Desmond Tan and Janil Puthucheary, spent over an hour engaging with the island's approximately 30 residents, learning firsthand about their concerns.
"We really enjoyed connecting with the community and understood their pickle with wildlife—like monkeys stealing rambutans from trees! We're committed to partnering with the National Parks Board to tackle these wildlife issues," said Valerie Lee, the new face on the PAP team.
Seniors in Need of Support
Another significant concern raised was how seniors struggle with redeeming digital support vouchers, leaving them disconnected from available aid. Lee emphasized an ongoing initiative to personally assist these elders, gathering contact information to provide direct support.
A Unique Island Life
The island's unique lifestyle is fading as Madam Ng Ngak Heng, who has lived on Pulau Ubin for five decades, lamented: "It's quiet these days. Many go abroad for holidays instead of visiting us here. Our kampung life is a rarity now!" Her voice echoed the need for new developments to attract visitors back to the island.
Political Change on the Horizon
The electoral landscape has shifted dramatically. The previous five-member Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC has been divided, creating the new Pasir Ris-Changi and Punggol GRCs. With 100,639 voters now part of the Pasir Ris-Changi GRC, this political maneuver signals a crucial period leading up to the next election.
SDA Ready to Challenge
The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) has announced plans to contest in this new constituency, continuing its long-standing competition in Pasir Ris-Punggol since 2006. Mr. Tan of PAP acknowledged the challenge but remained steadfast about focusing on serving the residents.
A Collaborative Effort Ahead
Amid the political shifts, PAP representatives pledged to work collaboratively with their constituents. Ms. Lee emphasized her commitment to engaging with both residents and party volunteers, showcasing a unified approach toward governance.
As the PAP team wrapped up their visit, the conversation highlighted the urgent need to address wildlife challenges and support the senior community. The attention on Pulau Ubin’s unique lifestyle and evolving constituency dynamics promises an exciting few years ahead for the island and its residents.
