Dynamic Leadership at Yale's Carbon Capture Center

In a thrilling development for climate science, Peter Raymond has been appointed as the new co-director of the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture (YCNCC), as announced by Michael Crair, Yale’s vice provost for research. Raymond, currently the Oastler Professor of Biogeochemistry at the Yale School of the Environment, steps into this pivotal role starting July 1.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Taking over from inaugural co-director Liza Comita, Raymond joins forces with co-director Dave Bercovici to steer the center's ambitious mission to combat climate change through innovative natural solutions. Under the guidance of Comita and Bercovici since the center's establishment in 2021, YCNCC has made significant strides in understanding and implementing carbon sequestration methods, from utilizing forests to exploring advanced techniques in oceans and rocks.

Bercovici praised Comita’s foundational work, noting, "Liza has been instrumental in building the YCNCC at record pace. I look forward to continuing this mission with Pete, whose wealth of expertise will be invaluable for our future initiatives."

FedEx's Generous Contribution Fuels Innovation

The establishment of YCNCC was made possible through a generous gift from FedEx, aiming to advance both fundamental and applied research in natural carbon capture. As a key component of Yale's overarching Planetary Solutions initiative, YCNCC not only seeks to lower greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere but also aims to create significant social and ecological benefits.

Raymond's Rich Experience and Innovative Vision

With over two decades of experience at YSE, Raymond's research expertise lies in the intricate interactions of carbon in freshwater and coastal ecosystems, notably how greenhouse gases are exchanged between these waters and the atmosphere. Currently, he leads significant projects such as a U.S. Department of Energy Earthshot grant focused on natural climate solutions.

Raymond’s leadership includes previous roles such as overseeing YSE’s climate initiative and being actively involved in various university committees. His impressive credentials and accolades include fellowships with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union.
