The Excitement Builds for GE2025!

SINGAPORE – The race is on! Ever since the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) dropped its report on March 11, political parties have been buzzing with activity, hitting the streets and rallying support across heartland communities.

The official start will come with the issuance of the Writ of Election, a critical document that sets the stage for crucial dates, including the pivotal day when Singaporeans will cast their votes.

What is the Writ of Election?

The Writ of Election is the key to the voting process. Issued by the president on the prime minister's advice, it announces Nomination Day and subsequently Polling Day.

Legally, Nomination Day must occur at least five days after the Writ is issued, but not more than a month later. The document also names the returning officer (RO), a civil servant responsible for ensuring fair election processes.

Mark Your Calendars for Nomination Day!

Nomination Day is when the final roster of candidates is unveiled. Candidates must submit their paperwork in person at designated centres and be supported by a team of proposers, seconders, and at least four assentors.

For context, in 2020 there were nine nomination centres throughout Singapore. Candidates are given until noon to file their nominations; after that, they can challenge the eligibility of their opponents.

Each candidate needs to pay a deposit, which, if they secure at least 12.5% of the votes, will be refunded. In 2020, that sum was pegged at $13,500!

Ready, Set… Campaign!

Once Nomination Day wraps up, the campaign frenzy kicks off and continues until Cooling-off Day. Polling Day has to occur between the 10th and 56th day after nominations, often seen swinging toward the minimum of nine days.

Candidates will need police permits to hold rallies while also taking to doorsteps, handing out flyers, and leveraging online ads to connect with voters.

Cooling-off Day: A Time to Reflect

Cooling-off Day precedes Polling Day by 24 hours and comes with a strict ban on campaigning to allow voters to gather their thoughts before voting.

Polling Day: Make Your Voice Heard!

Polling Day is a public holiday dedicated to exercising your democratic right. Voters can cast their ballots from 8 AM until 8 PM at their assigned stations. Although campaigning is off-limits, candidates can still check in at polling locations.

Once the polls close, ballots are sealed up and sent to counting stations, where the nail-biting tally begins. Typically, final results are unveiled just after midnight, but preliminary counts will tease voters with early insights!
