Wisconsinin osavaltion korkeimman oikeuden tuomarinvaalista formed a milestone where Elon Musk faced off against Democrats, prompting significant discussions across the United States.
The selection of the judge turned into a symbolic referendum where citizens expressed their dissatisfaction with Musk's lobbying power over the federal government, according to The New York Times. This vote was a critical moment because it reflected broader social and political issues, particularly related to monetary influence.
The Democratic-backed liberal judge Susan Crawford won the election, and her victory meant that a liberal majority remained on the Wisconsin Supreme Court, as the gap between her and conservative judge Brad Schimel was 9 percentage points.
Musk had invested about $25 million in Schimel's campaign, and extremely expensive electoral campaigns total up to $90 million, making them the most expensive judicial elections in U.S. history.
"As a little girl in Chippewa Falls, I never would have believed I would compete against the richest man in the world in court, and now we won," Crawford exclaimed joyfully to her supporters, according to CNN.
The defeated Schimel acknowledged his loss and promised to continue doing good work in Wisconsin. Crawford herself regarded the result as a message to the entire nation.
"Today, Wisconsinites defended our democracy and fair elections. We succeeded against unexpected attacks," noted Crawford.
Crawford's term on the state Supreme Court will last for ten years. Musk's personal campaign visits in Wisconsin attracted much attention. He was present at Schimel's campaign event in Green Bay, where he made a bold move by donating million-dollar checks to voters who had signed a petition "against activist judges."
According to Musk, his actions were intended to spark a grassroots movement against judicial activism. "We want judges to be judges, and that's a reasonable request. We see strange activities in Washington, where it seems possible for any federal judge to block the actions of the President of the United States. It's absurd. This has to stop," Musk stated.
Although the judicial election was not officially political, it was still seen as an important test of Democratic success following Donald Trump's presidency. This election makes it clear that the political landscape in the United States remains divided, and it may have long-term consequences for future elections.
