In a hilarious throwback to the '90s, Blink-182's bassist Mark Hoppus has opened up about a disastrous date he had with actress Melissa Joan Hart, best known for her role in "Sabrina the Teenage Witch."
In an exclusive excerpt from his upcoming memoir, "Fahrenheit-182," Hoppus shares the cringe-worthy details of their evening out.
The Date Begins at the Teen Choice Awards
The story kicks off at the Teen Choice Awards where Hart clearly had an interest in the newly famous musician. Following their first meeting, she sent her publicist to reach out to Hoppus’s label, which led to expectant dinner plans. "Totally normal courtship," he quips, recalling how he tried to keep it cool on their first phone call, suggesting dinner after he wrapped up shooting a music video in Los Angeles.
A Disconnected Dinner Conversation
The sushi dinner, however, turned out to be anything but romantic. Hoppus candidly describes the disconnect during their meal, saying, "Everything in her life revolved around acting, and it was hard to relate to her about anything else." While he tried to ignite conversation about food and literature, Hart's responses revolved around the diets of actors on set and scripts she was reading for upcoming roles. He muses, “From her perspective, all I could talk about was music. We just weren’t a great match.”
An Unexpected Turn of Events
After dining, Hart invited him back to her stunning home with breathtaking city views and a massive hot tub, which he suspected was a hint for a more intimate continuation of the evening. However, sensing the date wasn't quite right, Hoppus opted to say his goodbyes instead. Little did he know, that decision was fortuitous; that very night, he ended up speaking on the phone with Skye Everly, who he would marry the following year.
Looking Back with Laughter
Fast forward to today, Hoppus and Everly are happily married with one son, while Hart has built a life with Mark Wilkerson, guitarist of the band Course of Nature, whom she wed in 2003.
As Hoppus chuckled about his forgotten moments of young adulthood, he also expressed a hope that no one else from his past would choose to write a memoir reflecting on their early relationships. Isn’t it fascinating how sometimes the worst dates can lead to the best outcomes?
