Celebrating the Life of Harold Alexander Collett: The Beloved Bus Driver Who Touched Many Lives

2024-09-30

Beloved by many, Harold Alexander Collett, an iconic bus driver known for his kindness and good humor, has departed from this life, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.

For an impressive 35 years, Harold dedicated himself to his role as a bus driver, earning the affectionate nickname of the "cool bus driver." Known for his laid-back demeanor, he navigated the bumpy Killarney Road with ease, ensuring his young passengers enjoyed a comfortable ride. Even years after his retirement, many of those children grew up to find their own calling in emergency services, often citing Harold's influence on their lives. He made it a point to remember every child who stepped onto his bus, demonstrating a genuine interest in their lives, especially during his later years, where he ended his career driving a special needs/wheelchair bus. His compassion for children facing challenges set him apart, nurturing connections that made every child feel valued.

In his golden years, Harold found joy in model trains, transforming half of his basement into an intricate setup that he loved to showcase to visitors. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he loved to share his latest additions with family and friends.

Harold had a notable passion for tea and, later in life, coffee—so much so that inviting someone over meant they would surely be offered a hot cup of tea alongside an invitation to see his beloved train collection. This warmth extended to every aspect of his life.

Harold is survived by his loving wife Dianne, who shared 49 wonderful years as soulmates, their bond formed in their twenties. He leaves behind a daughter, Melissa, and four cherished grandchildren: Ellie, Weston, Benson, and Madison. Harold was a devoted grandfather, always the first to arrive at birthday parties and Christmas morning gatherings, eager to create lasting moments filled with joy and laughter.

He will be deeply missed by his siblings: Joan (Bob), Sharon (Larry), and Reggie (Gloria), as well as by those who had the privilege of knowing him. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Helen Collett, and his brother Richard (Patricia).

The community remembers Harold not just as a bus driver but as a generous soul with a heart of gold, always ready to lend a hand or offer support wherever needed. The impact he made on countless lives through his kindness and compassion will resonate for years to come.

Friends and family are welcome to gather in remembrance on Thursday, October 3rd, 2024, from 6-8 PM at Bishop’s Funeral Home & Crematorium located at 540 Woodstock Road in Fredericton. A private family interment will follow at Sunny Bank Cemetery.
