LOS ANGELES - Cissy Houston, an iconic figure in the music industry and the mother of the legendary Whitney Houston, has passed away at the age of 91. Known for her powerful voice and impressive talents, she died peacefully on Monday morning at her New Jersey home while under hospice care for Alzheimer's disease, as confirmed by her daughter-in-law, Pat Houston.

Born into a musical family, Cissy Houston's journey began as a gospel performer in the late 1930s. She first gained recognition as a member of The Drinkard Four, and later made her mark as part of the renowned group, The Sweet Inspirations. This choir made a name for themselves in the 1960s, providing backing vocals for iconic artists, including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Dionne Warwick.

Cissy's contributions to the music scene extended far beyond harmonizing in the background. She was a sought-after session singer, lending her distinctive voice to over 600 songs across various genres. Collaborating with giants such as Jimi Hendrix, Luther Vandross, Beyoncé, and even her daughter Whitney, Cissy's vocal prowess captivated audiences around the world.

Her work with The Sweet Inspirations led to significant hits, including the memorable “Sweet Inspiration” and the classic tracks they recorded with Van Morrison and Otis Redding.
