In a heartfelt display of solidarity, family and friends have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Kalvin Macdonald, a 17-year-old student from Hants County, Nova Scotia, as he battles a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer known as Ewing sarcoma.

Kalvin, a Grade 12 student at Avon View High School, has been unable to attend classes since January 8, after initially being hospitalized with what was believed to be pneumonia. Following further examinations, medical professionals at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax confirmed the diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma on January 28.

Chantal Myers, a friend of Kalvin's family who has been a significant driving force behind the fundraiser, fondly recalls how Kalvin befriended her son, Mikael, when they first moved to Windsor due to a career change brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The two boys bonded over soccer and even helped establish chess and table tennis clubs at their school.

Described as athletic and academically gifted, Kalvin quickly made a name for himself on the soccer field despite starting the sport later than his peers. He earned titles such as “Most Improved Player” during his high school years, showcasing his dedication and talent. Beyond sports, Kalvin is considered a bright student and an avid fan of Pokémon cards and video games.

However, his journey has taken a challenging turn. Following a series of intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments aimed at reducing tumors on his spine, Kalvin is presently facing severe pain that has left him unable to walk. He now relies on a motorized scooter for mobility, but his loved ones remain “optimistic and hopeful” about his long-term recovery.

The GoFundMe campaign, launched shortly after Kalvin’s diagnosis, aims to raise $10,000 to assist with mounting medical expenses, travel costs for treatments, and day-to-day living expenses for his family. As of late March, the campaign has already garnered over $6,000, demonstrating the powerful spirit of community support that surrounds Kalvin.

"My family has fallen in love with Kalvin from the day we met him,” Myers expressed, highlighting his infectious humor and positive outlook amid adversity. Donations have been used to enhance Kalvin's hospital experience, allowing him to order meals outside the standard hospital offerings and receive comforts like pajamas, slippers, and collectibles.

Myers expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support from the Nova Scotia community, stating, “The generosity and kindness shown to Kalvin and our family is truly incredible.” She also acknowledged the dedication of the healthcare teams and professionals working tirelessly to provide care and support for Kalvin during this challenging time.
