Ridge Meadows RCMP Seeks Public Assistance
In a concerning turn of events, the Ridge Meadows RCMP has taken to the public for assistance in identifying two men allegedly linked to a series of grandparent scams that have targeted vulnerable elderly residents in Metro Vancouver. The incidents, which occurred in August, have prompted investigators to review surveillance footage that captured images of the suspects.
Mechanism of the Scam
In these heartless scams, elderly victims were contacted over the phone by individuals masquerading as attorneys for a family member. The fraudulent phone calls led the victims to believe there was an urgent emergency involving their loved one—often claiming they were in jail or had been in a serious car accident. Under the pressure of the situation, victims were coerced into providing substantial sums of money to help resolve the supposed crisis.
In-Person Transactions
The victims were then met in person by the scammers to facilitate cash transactions, placing them at further risk. This deceptive tactic exploits the natural concerns that grandparents have for their family, making it especially heinous.
Call for Information
The RCMP is urging anyone who recognizes these men or has information related to these incidents to step forward. Individuals can contact the Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251 and reference file number 2024-17044.
Reporting Scams
Authorities want to emphasize the importance of reporting such scams to local law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. As scams become increasingly sophisticated, being vigilant and cautious is key to protecting yourself and your loved ones from these deceitful schemes.
