The Importance of Vaccination
As the holiday season approaches, the Windsor-Essex Medical Officer of Health is sounding the alarm about seasonal respiratory viruses, particularly stressing the importance of getting vaccinated against flu and COVID-19. Dr. Mehdi Aloosh is urging residents who have not yet received their vaccines to act swiftly, as the risk of respiratory illness is poised to increase.
"While seasonal respiratory illness cases are currently low, we cannot afford to be complacent," Dr. Aloosh warned. "Flu season is just around the corner, and we expect to see an uptick in cases sooner rather than later. This is an excellent opportunity for everyone—especially children under five and seniors—to get vaccinated."
Pregnant Women and Vaccination
Pregnant women are also encouraged to get their flu shot to provide their newborns with protection during the critical first months of life, after which infants can start their own vaccination journey.
COVID-19 Situation
Interestingly, although COVID-19 cases are trending downward, Dr. Aloosh predicts that the virus may see a resurgence as we enter the festive period. "Since September, we've noticed a steady, albeit slight, decline in cases," he noted. "It's crucial to keep in mind that, although COVID is no longer our primary concern, it is still very much present in our communities."
Access to Vaccines
Vaccines for flu and COVID-19 are readily available to the public at various locations, including doctor's offices, participating pharmacies, and health unit clinics. Dr. Aloosh encouraged everyone to take advantage of this access and get vaccinated before winter fully sets in.
