Google TV Expands Its Free Channel Lineup to 171 Just in Time for the Holidays!

As the holiday season approaches, Google TV is ramping up the festivities with exciting news for viewers. The platform has just rolled out a significant increase in its free channel offerings, now boasting a remarkable total of 171 channels available for users.

Earlier this year, Google TV made a splash by surpassing 150 free ad-supported live streaming channels in the U.S. The Freeplay feature allows new users to dive right into free streaming upon setting up their Google TV devices. While these enticing channels are currently limited to the U.S. audience, the service continues to expand its reach and content.

In a triumphant push towards the end of the year, Google has added over a dozen new channels. Notable additions that are already available to viewers include:

New Channel Additions

- Designated Survivor - Places & Spaces – The Great Christmas Light Fight - Best of Dr. Phil - Xumo Free Holiday Movie Channel - Xumo Free Holiday Classics - Xumo Christian Christmas - Continuum - Z Nation - The Design Network - Filmrise: Classic TV - UFC - Unbeaten - Big 12 Studios - Waypoint TV - PursuitUP

Moreover, the holiday spirit has also influenced the inclusion of several seasonal music channels from Stingray, featuring:

Festive Seasonal Channels

- Stingray Greatest Holiday Hits - Stingray Soul Storm Christmas - Stingray Hot Country Christmas

While these festive channels may be temporary, their addition brings joy to the viewing experience during what is often considered the most wonderful time of the year.

It's important to note, however, that Google has made some adjustments to its channel lineup. The car-themed channel, Motortrend Fast TV, has been removed, trimming down the options slightly amidst the new additions.

Outside of the Freeplay feature, Google is collaborating with partners like Plex and PlutoTV, bringing the total count of available free channels to over 1,100. However, to access these channels, users will need to download additional apps.

Despite this surge in content, there is a caveat. Many users have reported issues with the revamped Freeplay app, which has faced a rollback across multiple devices due to crashing problems. Currently, the app's functionality remains incomplete for many, particularly those using devices other than the Google TV Streamer.

As Google TV continues to innovate and expand its offerings, viewers can look forward to a delightful holiday season filled with an expansive array of programming. Stay tuned for more updates as the platform prepares for an exciting 2024!
