OTTAWA—The Green Party of Canada has raised serious alarms over the federal government's alarming lack of preparedness to combat highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), following a shocking reveal from a recent media investigation. The report, conducted by CTV National News and the Investigative Journalism Foundation, has spotlighted critical deficiencies in biosecurity measures, the abhorrent treatment of sick birds during culling operations, and startling gaps in public health readiness.

Despite the federal government distributing over $100 million in taxpayer funds to compensate affected poultry producers in 2022, critics argue that little has changed within the system. Many of these funds have seemingly lined the pockets of large corporations without prompting calls for stricter biosecurity protocols or preventive measures. The lack of updated regulations for biosecurity has left the door wide open for another potential HPAI outbreak.

Currently, multiple farms in British Columbia are grappling with infected bird populations. Disturbingly, a teenager in the province has contracted HPAI, marking Canada's first human case linked to the virus—a stark reminder of how this crisis could escalate if not swiftly addressed.

The investigation further revealed that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) relied extensively on contractors to execute the culling, who reportedly flouted biosecurity protocols. Additionally, the CFIA has come under fire for employing untested and inhumane euthanasia methods, such as asphyxiating birds with foam, leading to unnecessary suffering. This situation highlights the urgent need for established standards and enhanced transparency regarding animal welfare in these operations.

“Canada has been given a critical wake-up call with this outbreak, yet the government’s response has been tragically inadequate,” stated Green Party leader Elizabeth May. “Immediate action is needed to enhance biosecurity measures, ensure accountability, and better address the public health risks linked to the rampant growth of factory farming.”
