Health Alert: Passengers on Turkish Airlines Flights Possibly Exposed to Measles!

Peel Public Health has issued a warning regarding a recent case of measles tied to an individual with international travel history. The case, confirmed on Tuesday, raises concern for fellow travelers on specific Turkish Airlines flights.

Passengers aboard the following flights could have been exposed to this highly contagious disease:

Affected Flights

- Turkish Airlines Flight TK707 from Kabul to Istanbul on December 4

- Turkish Airlines Flight TK17 from Istanbul to Toronto on the same day

Additionally, anyone present at Toronto Pearson’s Terminal 1 between 6:45 PM and 10:30 PM on December 4 should be vigilant, as they may also be at risk.

Monitoring for Symptoms

Health officials emphasize the importance of monitoring for symptoms of measles within 21 days post-exposure. Symptoms to watch out for include:

- High fever

- Cough

- Runny nose

- Red, watery eyes

- Sensitivity to light

- A red rash that appears after several days

Recent Measles Cases

This alert comes as Peel Region sees its third confirmed case of measles this year. Alarmingly, there have been a total of 53 reported measles cases across Ontario, with seven patients requiring hospitalization. A tragic reminder of the disease's potential impact occurred earlier this year when a child under five in Hamilton succumbed to measles.

National Context

The Public Health Agency of Canada has noted a worrying trend, with an uptick in measles cases compared to previous years. As of November 30, 138 cases were recorded nationwide, a stark rise from just 12 cases in all of 2022.

What to Do If Exposed

If you believe you may have been exposed, it’s crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately. With measles being one of the most contagious viruses known, awareness and prompt action can be vital in preventing further spread. Stay informed and protect yourself and others!
