In a profound loss for the Newfoundland and Labrador community, Ron Young, the visionary founder of Downhome Magazine, has passed away at the age of 80. Known for his deep-rooted connections to his homeland, Young died on Friday at the Agnes Pratt Long Term Care home.
Originally hailing from Twillingate, Ron Young’s journey was as inspiring as it was transformative. After serving as a Metro Toronto Police officer, he channeled his nostalgia for his home province into a groundbreaking publication. In 1988, he established what was then known as the Downhomer Newspaper. The publication resonated with readers, providing a voice for those living away from their beloved Newfoundland and Labrador, and quickly evolved into Downhome Magazine — a monthly treasure chest of stories, culture, and connection that has captured the hearts of readers across Canada and even into the United States.
Young's commitment to celebrating and preserving the rich heritage of Newfoundland did not stop with the magazine. Upon returning to his cherished Newfoundland after retirement, he opened the Downhome Shoppe on Water Street in St. John’s, further spreading the spirit of his magazine through local arts, crafts, and products that embody the culture of the province.
As the community mourns his passing, plans for a memorial service will be announced in due course. Ron Young leaves behind a legacy that enriched the lives of many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, ensuring that the vibrant stories and traditions of the province will continue to thrive. His contributions not only created a sense of belonging for those far from home but also underscored the importance of cultural identity in a rapidly changing world.
Stay tuned as we remember a remarkable life that celebrated the essence of Newfoundland and Labrador.
