Experience the Heat with ‘Incandescence’

A dazzling documentary is set to ignite conversations as it hits the screens next week! Filmmakers Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper bring us ‘Incandescence,’ a striking exploration of wildfires that promises to be the most sought-after ticket in town.

A Unique Perspective on Wildfires

Rather than a typical firefighting narrative, ‘Incandescence’ invites viewers into the cycle of seasons, highlighting fire’s destructive and regenerative powers. The film connects on-the-ground footage with compelling stories from Indigenous Elders and first responders, showcasing how communities adapt to their ever-changing ecosystems.

The Spark that Ignited the Film's Concept

The idea for this innovative project took form during a smoky summer seven years ago at Bonniebrook Beach, where the filmmakers experienced firsthand the haze of distant wildfires. "That was when we truly felt the impacts of wildfires, even from miles away," recalls Ami.

Rediscovering the Positive Role of Fire

As production began, the duo recognized their knowledge was primarily about catastrophic fires, prompting them to delve into the concept of ‘good’ fires. Ripper explains, "We realized we needed to explore this ancient wisdom, especially how it applies today." Their collaboration with the Okanagan Nation showcases the vital role of prescribed burns, a traditional method of using controlled, low-intensity fires to prevent mega-fires.

Nature’s Resilience: A Different Take on Fire

In an interesting twist, the film emphasizes the roles of animals in wildfire resilience. Highlighting the beaver as "nature’s firefighter," the film illustrates how their wetlands act as natural fire barriers. Indigenous perspectives on fire add depth, likening it to a sly creature that surprises its surroundings.

A Distinctive Filmmaking Style

Ami and Ripper made bold choices in presentation, opting to exclude traditional interview shots and a musical score. Instead, they use immersive sound design combined with evocative imagery of wildfires, creating an experience that is both awe-inspiring and harrowing.

A Beacon of Hope Amidst Crisis

The documentary does not shy away from the grim realities of climate change, but it also carries a message of hope. Fire Chief Jason Brolund reminds us that proactive community efforts are crucial in addressing the climate crisis.
