Toronto-native Masha Glanville, 60, and Vancouver's Robert Glanville, 58, have embarked on a remarkable eight-year journey that has taken them to 195 countries and counting, including Palestine, Kosovo, Taiwan, and Vatican City. Their travels have immersed them in vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes, from the sun-drenched villages of Burkina Faso to the wildlife-rich Galápagos Islands, and stunning beaches along East Africa's coast.
The couple's journey began with a simple desire to travel. As Robert recalls, "We started off just wanting to explore the world. Then Masha proposed turning it into a purpose: why not try to visit every UN-recognized country?"
Prior to their travels, Masha was entrenched in a high-pressure executive job in the biotechnology sector, leaving her feeling burned out. Together they craved a deeper connection with the world and its diverse cultures. This realization led them to sell their possessions, downsize to just two backpacks each, and set off on their global adventure after their son left home.
Living Light, Loving Life
"One of the biggest realizations we’ve had is that you really need very little to be happy," Masha reflects, having witnessed the joy of people living modestly in various parts of the world. Their radical lifestyle shift was both liberating and eye-opening, allowing them to see the beauty in simplicity.
The couple has always had travel embedded in their lives, such as a memorable camper trip to Nicaragua in 1992 with their young son. Today, they spend around four to seven days in each country, returning to Toronto every few months to regroup and connect with family.
Their travels often take them off the beaten path to places that many travelers might avoid, such as Syria, Yemen, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Contrary to common perceptions, Masha shares, "In countries labeled as war zones, we’ve encountered some of the kindest and most hospitable people."
Despite the challenges they’ve faced, like navigating visa issues in Djibouti and experiencing theft in Italy, the Glanvilles remain dedicated to mindful and impactful travel. They emphasize making connections with local communities and strive to ensure that their presence has a positive effect.
Moments of Magic
Their journey is not just about the destinations, but about the connections they forge along the way. Masha recalls a moment in Togo, where a young boy crafted toys from mud and sticks, showcasing the resourcefulness and creativity that often inspires them. "You realize that happiness isn’t tied to what you have, but rather to who you share it with," she says.
From witnessing a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to participating in the creative process of calabash pottery in Burkina Faso, the couple has collected countless memories that they hold dear. Masha fondly remembers Mozambique's stunning beaches rivaling those of the Maldives, emphasizing the incredible beauty found in lesser-known locales.
The Path Ahead
As they approach their goal of visiting all 197 countries, the Glanvilles continue to prioritize thoughtful and immersive travel experiences. They plan to explore Greenland, revisit Iceland, Japan, and Italy, and even consider biking through Europe and Asia with their mountain bikes.
While their globetrotting lifestyle remains thrilling, they're also learning the importance of slowing down. "Burnout can creep in when you’re constantly on the go. Staying in one place for a week feels like taking it slow for us," Robert explains.
Masha and Robert exhibit an unrelenting curiosity about cultures and a commitment to understanding and appreciating every corner of the globe they visit. This Canadian couple is eager to keep discovering, learning, and connecting—with the world and with each other—for as long as they can.
