In a significant move towards revitalizing the aging Alexandra Bridge, the National Capital Commission (NCC) has unveiled three shortlisted design concepts that promise to transform the interprovincial crossing. Titled "Echo," "Motion," and "Rendez vous," these designs were showcased during a recent NCC board meeting, kicking off a 24-day public engagement campaign aimed at gathering community feedback.

Connecting Communities with Modern Engineering

Each design aims to enhance the area's connectivity and celebrate its historical significance while responding to the environmental dynamics of the surrounding landscape. The NCC has encouraged public participation with open houses held in Gatineau and Ottawa, providing residents an opportunity to view the proposals firsthand.

The concept called "Echo" offers a contemporary twist on the current truss bridge. It features three piers strategically placed in the river, a main span of 210 meters, and aims to retain the iconic profile that has become synonymous with the Alexandra Bridge. Chief architect Martin Knight has described "Echo" as a "reinterpretation of the existing historic structure," which respects the bridge’s heritage without being a direct copy.

Graceful Arches and Environmental Harmony

The second design, "Rendez vous," boasts a striking dual-arch structure that measures spans of 290 meters and 220 meters, converging at a single river pier. Notably, these arches rise to 15 meters above the current bridge's towers, offering not only a bold aesthetic but also enhanced transparency intended to elevate views of the Ottawa River. Knight emphasized the design’s aim to underscore the river's cultural and environmental significance, particularly acknowledging its importance to the Algonquin Nation.

Lastly, the "Motion" design features a dynamic formation with one primary arch and two secondary arches, inspired by the natural movement of the Ottawa River and specifically referencing the twisting motion of eels. This creative vision strives to encapsulate the flow of the river, promoting a harmonious blend with nature.

A Call for Community Input

The public is invited to engage in the design selection process, with open houses scheduled for October 2 in Gatineau and October 3 in Ottawa. For those who can't attend, online consultations will occur until October 24.

Originally constructed in 1901, the Alexandra Bridge currently stands closed to all vehicular traffic due to the extensive damage it has suffered over time. Road salt corrosion is among many factors contributing to its deterioration, and repairs are expected to keep the bridge closed until February 2025. Once operational, it is estimated that the bridge accommodates around 10% of daily vehicle traffic between Ottawa and Gatineau.

In light of safety concerns, Public Services and Procurement Canada has noted that repairing the existing bridge is not a viable option, as its lifespan has ended. The proposed designs aim to create a modern and sustainable replacement that minimizes future maintenance challenges while also catering to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists.

Looking Ahead

As we stand at this pivotal moment, the community's voice will play a crucial role in selecting the design that will shape the future of interprovincial transportation and connection in the region. Demolition of the old bridge is anticipated to begin in 2028, with hopes that a stunning new span will be ready by 2032, thereby ensuring enhanced safety and accessibility for decades to come.
