As the chill of fall approaches, Sarnia-Lambton residents are gearing up for a critical health initiative—an extensive immunization campaign focused on COVID-19 and the seasonal flu. With colder months ahead, access to vaccines will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health.

This month, local primary care offices and participating pharmacies are making vaccines readily available. Residents can conveniently locate nearby vaccine sites using the resources provided by public health authorities.

According to Dr. Karalyn Dueck, Lambton's Medical Officer of Health, the respiratory virus season typically spans from November to March. As early as October, residents in long-term care facilities and hospitals were already eligible for immunizations. Importantly, Dr. Dueck announced that by mid-October, high-risk individuals—including young children, older adults, pregnant people, those from First Nations communities, and first responders—will start receiving their vaccines. By October 28, the general public will also have access to the seasonal respiratory vaccines.

To further combat the spread of illnesses, Dr. Dueck emphasizes the importance of staying home when feeling unwell and wearing masks for up to ten days post-symptom onset. Good hand hygiene, covering coughs and sneezes, improving indoor air quality, and spending time outdoors when possible are additional recommended practices.

Amid these evolving health protocols, immunizations remain crucial. Dr. Dueck noted, “We had significant practices in place during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic that heightened our awareness of these protective measures.” This year, the Ministry of Health is expanding access to RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) vaccines, which will not only be available for older adults but also introduce a new monoclonal antibody treatment specifically designed for infants.

Starting October 17, Lambton Public Health will offer pediatric clinics, and a mobile clinic is set to launch to reach First Nation communities and individuals who may have difficulty accessing standard health services.

Excitingly, the province assures that it is both safe and convenient to receive the COVID-19 and flu shots simultaneously. The timeline for administering the vaccines will depend on each pharmacy and healthcare provider’s vaccine shipments.

Stay informed, get vaccinated, and together, let’s keep the Sarnia-Lambton community safe this season! Don't miss out on this opportunity—ensure you and your loved ones are protected!
