In a shocking turn of events, a man has been arrested after allegedly igniting the uniforms of two Vancouver police officers in the city's Downtown Eastside.
The incident unfolded on Thursday as the officers were on patrol as part of Task Force Barrage, aimed at increasing police visibility and tackling organized crime.
According to police reports, the officers attempted to detain a man for jaywalking. In a desperate bid to escape, the suspect fled, leading to a tense pursuit.
During the arrest attempt, police claim the suspect unleashed a flammable substance, igniting the officers' uniforms before continuing his flight.
Fortunately, the officers managed to extinguish the flames independently—one remained unharmed, while the other received medical treatment and is now recuperating at home.
The suspect, a 40-year-old Vancouver resident, sustained burns and is currently in police custody. Authorities revealed that he was already wanted on a provincial warrant for ten additional offenses.
Police are recommending serious charges against the man, including assaulting an officer with a weapon, obstructing justice, and breaching release conditions.
Vancouver City Councillor Brian Montague, who formerly served with the Vancouver Police Department, condemned the incident, calling it "unacceptable and intolerable." He emphasized the urgent need for initiatives like Task Force Barrage to ensure public safety.
He also pointed out the limitations faced by city officials in enhancing safety, urging higher levels of government to take decisive action. "It’s crucial for provincial and federal authorities to step up now to address public safety concerns," he stated.
Montague urged for quicker bail reforms and increased guidance for prosecuting repeat offenders, along with more support for tackling addiction and housing crises in the area.
