The Timeline of Events Leading to Her Disappearance

Kobayashi flew from Maui with plans to visit family in upstate New York. She was supposed to connect through Los Angeles International Airport but never boarded her flight to John F. Kennedy Airport. Her sister, Sydni, revealed that they shared a flight reservation with Kobayashi's ex-boyfriend; although they had broken up, they kept the tickets. Kobayashi mentioned to her family that she would spend the night at the airport.

Surveillance footage later revealed that she was spotted in a bookstore at The Grove shopping mall in downtown L.A., where she charged her phone for about an hour while grabbing food. She seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere, which was in stark contrast to the fear expressed in her later messages.

On November 10, just two days after missing her flight, Kobayashi attended an event featuring Nike and LeBron James at The Grove and even posted about it on Instagram, indicating she was not in dire distress. However, on November 11—the last day she was heard from—she conveyed alarming messages to friends, stating she believed someone was trying to steal her identity and funds. One concerning text claimed, 'Deep Hackers wiped my identity, stole all of my funds, & have had me on a mind f**k since Friday.'

These messages reflected a troubling mental state. Following her disappearance, her family filed a missing persons report as they were unaware she had crossed into Mexico.

In a devastating turn, just weeks into the search for his daughter, Kobayashi’s father, Ryan, was found dead near LAX on November 25. He had traveled to Los Angeles to look for Hannah and worked tirelessly to distribute flyers about her disappearance. The medical examiner ruled his death as a suicide, and his family believes the stress of the situation took a heavy toll on him.

'It took a toll on him. Seeing the possibilities of where his daughter could be and the rumors swirling around—it all became too much,' said Larie Pidgeon, Kobayashi's aunt, recalling the compassionate nature of Ryan.
