Astrophotographer Josh Dury was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, snapping breathtaking shots of the comet over the picturesque Mendip Hills in Somerset, UK. "It was amazing to catch this newly discovered comet just hours after its designation!" Dury exclaimed.

The Tools of the Trade!

Using a high-end Sony A7S II camera paired with a Sigma 150-600mm lens, Dury zoomed in at 369mm to catch the comet at approximately 4:50 a.m. local time. His stunning visuals showcase the comet's unique features and mesmerizing color, which are a treat for both amateur and seasoned astronomers.

What Makes Comets So Special?

Dury elaborates, "Comets are the DNA of our solar system’s formation; these 'dirty snowballs' give us glimpses into the universe's secrets. Each one is a celestial gem with its own personality, providing clues to our cosmic history."

A Spectacular Discovery!

Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) was first spotted in late March by Australian amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo. He utilized data from the SWAN instrument onboard the SOHO spacecraft—originally designed to observe the sun—to map hydrogen in the solar wind. The International Astronomical Union has officially confirmed the discovery, granting it the official designation.
