Swedish Artist’s Dream Home Set to Make Historic Moon Debut This Week!
In a groundbreaking art venture, a tiny red house created by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg is poised to embark on a cosmic journey to the moon but not before fulfilling Genberg’s dream of a lifetime. This quirky abode, dubbed the "Moonhouse", will hitch a ride on a lunar lander operated by the Japanese company ispace, scheduled to launch aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral at precisely 1:11 a.m. this Wednesday.
For the past 25 years, Genberg has envisioned placing his iconic Swedish-style miniature house on the lunar surface, making this dream a surreal reality. “It’s a crazy, maybe idiotic idea, but at the same time, it’s a beautifully poetic thought to send a little red house with white corners to the moon,” he enthusiastically remarked in a Facebook video. “And now it’s happening!”
Why bother with such an imaginative undertaking? “It’s art,” Genberg firmly states. Currently in Florida for the highly-anticipated launch, he is brimming with excitement about watching his creation launch into space. “It’s small here on Earth, but it will be massive on the moon—there’s nothing like it up there!” he told The Associated Press.
Crafted from aluminum and sealed with a special space-certified paint, the 12-centimeter (about 4.7 inches) long, 8-centimeter (3.1 inches) wide, and 10-centimeter (3.9 inches) tall house boasts durability fit for space.
The Moonhouse is the pièce de résistance in Genberg's artistic journey, which has seen it installed in remarkable locations worldwide, including treetops, underwater, at the Great Wall of China, and even temporarily at the International Space Station alongside Sweden’s first astronaut, Christer Fuglesang.
While the lunar house project was a collaborative effort spearheaded by Genberg, around 70 committed supporters rallied together to donate between 7 million and 10 million Swedish kronor (roughly $620,000 to $888,000) to make this extraordinary journey possible.
Julien-Alexandre Lamamy, CEO of ispace Europe, expressed the project’s significance, stating, “The vision of the artwork merges with our own; to expand our planet and future and extend the sphere of human life into space.”
As the launch countdown continues, the lunar rover Tenacious is expected to release the Moonhouse, which will stand alone on the moon’s surface for thousands, if not millions, of years, as Genberg dreams of it becoming a timeless symbol of creativity and human imagination in the cosmos. Will this tiny house become a landmark of interstellar art? Stay tuned as history unfolds!
