Surge in Respiratory Illnesses
As the festive season approaches, the Maritimes are grappling with a surge in respiratory illnesses that could dampen holiday cheer. Healthcare experts report an array of illnesses on the rise, including colds, flu, pneumonia, walking pneumonia, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and even COVID-19.
"There's a lot going on this year. We're seeing a mix of colds, flu, and respiratory infections," explains pharmacist Jamie Flynn. The busy holiday season, coupled with increased indoor gatherings, has led to a spike in requests for vaccines and treatments at local pharmacies. Flynn noted, "We're swamped right now with COVID and flu vaccinations, as well as RSV vaccines."
Effects on Students and Locals
Students and locals alike are feeling the effects. Halifax student Sophie Delorey shared her experience: "I’ve been struggling with a stuffy nose and sore throat for over a week now. It's been pretty debilitating right before the holidays."
Predictions for the Respiratory Season
Infectious diseases expert Dr. Lisa Barrett predicted that respiratory illness cases will escalate further as we enter peak season. "We're moving into the most intense period of the respiratory season now. Influenza cases are beginning to rise, although we're not yet seeing the peak numbers—January and February are typically when things get the most intense. RSV cases are higher compared to October and November, but still below expected peaks, and COVID-19 cases remain elevated with thousands of new cases reported."
Pharmacy Response
Flynn detailed the variety of patients seeking help, saying, "All age groups are coming in with cold symptoms. The most common complaints are basic colds, alongside cases of strep throat and pneumonia."
Many Maritimers are turning to their pharmacies for relief, with Flynn noting that people often approach him seeking guidance on whether their symptoms are viral and require no treatment, or if a prescription for antibiotics is necessary for a bacterial infection.
Preventive Measures and Recommendations
With the threat of illness looming, Dr. Barrett has some crucial tips to stay safe during the holiday season. "If you don't have a fever or a cough, consider wearing a mask when indoors with groups. It's also wise to carry hand sanitizer and use it frequently. And remember, it's still not too late to get vaccinated against flu and COVID."
While currently, COVID-19 cases are leading over influenza and RSV, experts warn that these trends are fluid and may shift as the respiratory season progresses. With the holidays drawing near, staying informed and taking preventive measures can help ensure a healthier festive season for everyone!
