A measles outbreak that started in New Brunswick just last month has escalated dramatically, now reaching a concerning total of 44 confirmed cases. This alarming situation has primarily affected Fredericton and surrounding areas in the upper Saint John River valley.

According to health department spokesperson David Kelly, every case identified so far can be traced back to a single initial infection related to international travel. Shockingly, over 80% of those infected are children and teenagers under the age of 19, highlighting a significant vulnerability within the younger population. None of the individuals affected had received measles vaccinations, underlining the critical importance of immunization in preventing the spread of such infectious diseases.

Health officials are sounding the alarm for those who have either never contracted measles or haven't been vaccinated, especially individuals who are immunocompromised, as they are at heightened risk of infection upon exposure.

In an effort to combat this outbreak, the Horizon Health Network is organizing measles vaccination clinics in various locations. Parents are encouraged to take their children to these clinics, with scheduled sessions in Fredericton on Thursday and Friday, followed by Woodstock, N.B., on November 27, and Stanley, N.B., on November 29.
