Big Star Sandwich, the beloved Lower Mainland sandwich chain, is set to make its debut in the heart of Vancouver, transforming the now-closed Japanese eatery Ta-Ke Don at 802 West Broadway into a sandwich haven. This exciting development means that food enthusiasts in the city will finally have access to its mouthwatering menu after years of being just outside town.
Currently, Big Star Sandwich operates eight locations across Metro Vancouver but has yet to establish one within Vancouver city limits itself. That’s about to change as they put up signs and prepare for the renovations of their new space. They've already posted “Help Wanted” signs, hinting at their eagerness to staff the location and serve up delectable sandwiches soon.
Since its inception in 2013 in New Westminster, Big Star Sandwich has been making waves known for their made-to-order sandwiches served on the signature filone bread. Each item on their menu is distinctively numbered, making it both fun and easy for patrons to order. Notable creations include the popular number 17, a hearty beef dip sandwich, and the number 20, featuring a savory combination of corned beef and hickory sticks.
In a culinary landscape dominated by fast-food chains serving burgers and pizzas, Big Star Sandwich has carved out a unique niche—positioning itself as the “anti-Subway,” according to Director of Operations Alex Johrden. In 2017, the chain gained international media attention when famed actor Liam Neeson took advantage of their innovative marketing strategy, an advertisement claiming, “Liam Neeson eats here for free.”
Although there’s no official opening date yet, the anticipation is palpable. Vancouverites can expect a fresh take on sandwiches in this bustling area—promising to tantalize taste buds and create a new favorite lunchtime destination. Stay tuned for updates as Big Star Sandwich prepares to slice into the city's vibrant food scene!
