In a resolute declaration, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum made it crystal clear that any unilateral drone strikes proposed by the U.S. against drug cartels in Mexico will be met with outright rejection. Speaking to the media on April 8, Sheinbaum responded to alarming reports that the Trump administration was contemplating drone attacks to curb drug trafficking.
"The people of Mexico will not accept any intervention or interference from abroad, under any circumstance," Sheinbaum asserted passionately. "We are coordinating and collaborating, but we are not subordinate, and there will be no meddling in our actions."
These comments came in the wake of a troubling NBC News report from several military and intelligence sources, suggesting that the U.S. was evaluating the feasibility of drone strikes against criminal syndicates in Mexico. Although no decisions have been finalized, the discussion has raised eyebrows and intensified scrutiny regarding U.S.-Mexico relations.
Reinforcing her position, Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy dialogue on security issues, expressing confidence that the U.S. would refrain from any rash, unilateral actions. Just a couple of months earlier, she had also condemned the U.S. designation of Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, emphasizing that such moves must not be perceived as an opportunity for the U.S. to infringe on Mexico’s sovereignty.
She emphasized during a briefing in February, "This cannot be an opportunity for the U.S. to invade our sovereignty. Collaboration and coordination are our priorities, but certainly not subordination or interventionism." This strong stance echoed her government's commitment to protecting national sovereignty while addressing shared challenges related to drug trafficking.
Interestingly, recent testimonies from U.S. officials have cast doubt on the effectiveness of the terrorist designations. Colby Jenkins, Assistant Defense Secretary for Special Operations, remarked in a Senate committee hearing that these designations do not empower U.S. military forces to carry out drone strikes in Mexico, despite the rhetoric surrounding them.
Under questioning from Senator Elissa Slotkin, Jenkins indicated that while the designations provide a framework for addressing drug-related issues, they do not automatically sanction military actions like drone strikes. Despite speculation about their potential, Jenkins clarified that the military's capacity to act remains limited.
In a world increasingly fraught with challenges related to drug trafficking and national security, Sheinbaum's bold proclamations serve as a pivotal reminder of Mexico's stance on sovereignty and collaborative effort as nations confront the adversities of the modern age.
