First Incident

The first incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. in a bungalow located on Yorkvalley Way. Fire crews arrived to find a vehicle ablaze inside the home’s attached garage. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the garage and was declared under control in under half an hour. Thankfully, all occupants managed to evacuate safely, and there were no reported injuries.

Second Incident

Just a few hours later, around 5:22 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of another fire at a two-storey home on Four Mile Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered flames and thick smoke emanating from the attached garage. Swift action was taken with an interior attack and the assistance of water tankers; the fire was brought under control before it could spread further. Again, there were no injuries reported, with damages primarily confined to the garage.

Third Incident

The night took an even more concerning turn around 8:30 p.m. when firefighters were called to a third fire at a bi-level home on David Street. This time, they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames, with the fire beginning to encroach on the house and its garage. Crews battled the blaze and declared it under control shortly after 10 p.m. Miraculously, there were no injuries in this incident as well.

Safety Precautions

In light of these incidents, WFPS reminded residents of essential safety precautions to prevent fire risks associated with block heaters. They advised homeowners to regularly check block heaters and extension cords for damage before use, replace cords if accidentally detached while driving, and avoid plugging vehicles inside garages regardless of attachment. Other valuable tips included not overloading extension cords, refraining from running electrical cords through buildings or under mats, and keeping cords clear of water or snow.

Fourth Incident

As if the day couldn’t get any busier, WFPS responded to a fourth fire on Burnell Street later that night, which was suspected to be caused by an electrical malfunction. Around 9:23 p.m., firefighters arrived at the scene and noticed smoke billowing from a two-storey building. After making a swift interior attack, they managed to bring the fire under control in just about 15 minutes with all residents safely evacuated beforehand.
