In a surprising revelation, The Young Bucks have opened up about the tumultuous creative decisions that led to their eventual loss of the AEW World Tag Team Championships to Private Party. During a segment on Tunnel Talk, Matt and Nick Jackson shared how the original plans for their title reign were altered multiple times before they finally dropped the belts.

“We like to plan ahead,” Matt Jackson stated, indicating their strategic approach towards storytelling in their wrestling careers. Nick Jackson elaborated, shedding light on the chaotic nature of their title run. “For instance, with this last run we just had, we were supposed to drop those titles months before we actually dropped them. But creative changed, I would say four to five different times in the last six months.”

This rollercoaster of changes had The Young Bucks initially scheduled to lose their titles to different teams before the decision pivoted towards Private Party. “At one point, we were gonna lose the belts to a certain team,” Nick recalled, “and then a month later, it changed to another team.”

Nick shared an intriguing encounter with Private Party, who approached them with the idea of a long-term storyline. “They mentioned wanting to do a long-term program with us, and we had to tell them that wasn’t in the cards, as Tony just laid out the direction for us,” he said.

Change After WrestleDream

The narrative shifted dramatically post their match at AEW WrestleDream, a moment that ignited enthusiasm in both The Bucks and executive Tony Khan. “Something changed, and we ended up wrestling them at WrestleDream, and we tore the house down,” Nick expressed. This electrifying performance was pivotal, as Nick noted, “As soon as we got backstage, we knew, alright, it’s in Tony’s eyes… We gotta pivot, we gotta change our plans again.”

A Fulfilled Decision

Their decision to ultimately pass the torch to Private Party brought about a sense of fulfillment. “That was the fourth time changing plans for those titles to be dropped,” said Nick. “But we were happy because we wanted to put those guys over. They deserved the spotlight. I’m just glad Matt and I got to give them that last shove before we left.”
