In a shocking early morning assault, at least one person has died, and several embassies have suffered damage due to a relentless Russian missile barrage targeting Ukraine's capital, Kyiv. The Kyiv City Military Administration confirmed the fatality in a Telegram post, revealing that twelve others were injured—five of whom required hospitalization, while the remainder received treatment on-site.
This attack comes on the heels of provocative comments made by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his end-of-year conference, where he challenged Ukraine to a “duel.” In a swift rebuttal, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky labeled Putin a "dumbass" in a fiery online response that has further escalated the tension between the two nations.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force Command, the assault involved five ballistic missiles launched at approximately 7 a.m. on Friday. Fortunately, Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept all missiles. Additionally, 40 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were destroyed, while another 20 drones failed to reach their intended targets. However, debris from the intercepted missiles resulted in damage to infrastructure and injuries within the city center.
Reports indicate extensive damage in various districts, including an office building, road surface, and gas pipeline. Several vehicles were set ablaze as a result, according to Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration. A fire also erupted at a construction site in another area, adding to the chaos.
The attack took a particularly concerning turn as several embassies housed within the same vicinity were affected, including those of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Portugal, and Montenegro. Heorhii Tykhyi, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s foreign ministry, condemned the missile strike as "barbaric." Notably, Portugal's embassy reported only light damage and promptly summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires to voice their protest.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the missile strikes were aimed at military targets in response to a recent Ukrainian attack on a chemical plant in Russia's Rostov region, carried out with American-made ATACMS missiles. Russia alleged that it conducted precision strikes against multiple military sites in Kyiv, including the SBU command post and facilities involved in the production of missile systems.
In the face of this aggression, President Zelensky reiterated the need for increased sanctions against Russia and expressed gratitude to international partners for their continued support, particularly in bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
The violence was not contained to Kyiv alone; the southern city of Kherson also faced significant assault on the same morning, with Russian forces allegedly ramping up shelling in a bid to advance. Local military authorities report that two fatalities and ten additional injuries resulted from the bombardment.
This latest series of attacks underscores the intensifying conflict in Ukraine, raising urgent questions about the international response and the ever-looming threat of escalated warfare. As tensions heighten, the world watches closely, awaiting potential repercussions on a global scale.
