In a significant shift just two days after being appointed as the Jets' interim head coach, Jeff Ulbrich has announced a major overhaul in the team's offensive strategy by removing Nathaniel Hackett from his play-calling responsibilities. Effective immediately, passing game coordinator Todd Downing will take the reins, a decision that has sent shockwaves throughout the franchise.

Hackett, who is now in his second season as offensive coordinator after a tumultuous tenure with the Denver Broncos, finds himself at the center of controversy yet again. This move not only highlights the struggles of the Jets' offensive unit—which currently ranks last in the league in rushing yards per game—but also raises questions about the effectiveness of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Hackett’s staunchest supporter.

The Jets initially hired Hackett in 2023 under the premise that he would bolster Rodgers' transition to New York. However, the offensive disarray under their guidance ultimately played a significant role in the dismissal of former head coach Robert Saleh, who had reportedly considered making this very change before his exit.

In addressing the media, Ulbrich emphasized that the transition to Downing as play caller was not made lightly. “This is a different take on things; it’s a fresh approach,” he remarked. “Todd will have full say on the game plan and ultimately the plays that are called during games.”

Rodgers, who has remained a loyal advocate for Hackett, expressed understanding regarding the decision. “I had conversations with [Ulbrich] about the changes coming after Robert’s departure,” Rodgers stated. “I told him I'd support whatever he decided.” Despite Hackett’s disappointment over the removal, Ulbrich has confirmed that he won't lose his title as offensive coordinator and has offered him the option to remain with the team.

Downing, who brings a checkered history from previous roles, including stints with the Raiders and Titans, is stepping into this pivotal role amid skepticism about his capabilities. His tenure with the Titans saw a steady decline in offensive performance, culminating in a dismal ranking of 30th in the league last season. Additionally, Downing faced public scrutiny due to a DUI arrest in 2022, which complicates his track record.

While Ulbrich may not envision sweeping changes to the offensive scheme, he aims to instill a more aggressive and physically imposing style reminiscent of Downing’s previous teams. “For every Tennessee offense I ever went against when Todd was the play caller, they were tough and ruthless; they ran the ball effectively and played on their own terms,” Ulbrich noted.

As the Jets prepare to debut their revamped offensive strategy against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night, Rodgers has asserted the need for improvement across the board. “We need to run the ball better; I need to play better,” he remarked. He stressed the importance of cohesion, lamenting that offensive struggles have often stemmed from just one player failing to execute their role effectively.

With the Jets in desperate need of a turnaround, the upcoming game will be a critical test for both Downing and the team's struggling offense. Fans are left wondering: Can this drastic leadership change salvage the Jets' season, or is it just another chapter in what has become a dismal saga for the franchise? Stay tuned!
