Urgent Call to Action: Global Leaders Must Step Up for Gazans Amid Ongoing Blockade

The directors of six major United Nations agencies have issued a heartfelt plea to world leaders, urging immediate action to ensure that food and essential supplies reach the desperate Palestinian population in Gaza. The plea comes as Israel enforces a strict blockade, halting deliveries for over a month, impacting millions.

In a joint statement, the UN officials condemned the dire situation, declaring that Palestinians are "trapped, bombed, and starved again," with vital supplies accumulating at crossing points. Israel's blockade began on March 2, following the expiration of the initial ceasefire, with the government demanding that Hamas agree to extend this temporary peace. However, Hamas remains defiant, accusing Israel of breaking its commitments.

Israeli authorities assert that there is sufficient food stockpiled in Gaza "for a long period," but UN agencies contest this claim, stating that the reality paints a grimmer picture. The UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), and other organizations highlight the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, as commodities deplete rapidly.

Many crucial services in Gaza are shutting down due to the blockade: all UN-supported bakeries have ceased operations, markets lack fresh produce, and hospitals are forced to ration medications such as painkillers and antibiotics. With the health system stretched to its limits, essential medical supplies are running low.

"Faced with the tightening blockade that has now persisted for two months," the UN leaders insisted, "world powers must act firmly, urgently, and decisively to uphold the principles of international humanitarian law. This includes protecting civilians, facilitating aid delivery, releasing hostages, and renewing a ceasefire."

International humanitarian law mandates that Israel must ensure the fundamental needs of civilians under its control are met, including the unimpeded passage of humanitarian assistance. The temporary ceasefire previously allowed an influx of aid and saw Hamas release hostages, yet the resumption of violence has worsened the situation.

After Israel resumed its bombardment and ground operations on March 18, the situation has exacerbated. Over the last 24 hours alone, Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry reported that at least 58 people were killed in ongoing strikes, including five children from a home hit in Deir al-Balah. Further attacks in Beit Lahia and near Gaza City also resulted in multiple fatalities.

Tragically, the conflict continues to claim the lives of journalists as well, with the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate announcing the death of Ahmed Mansour, wounded in a strike that also killed fellow reporter Helmi al-Faqaawi. Another journalist, Hassan Eslaih, remains in critical condition after being targeted as a "Hamas terrorist" by Israeli forces.

This devastating conflict was ignited by a surprise assault from Hamas on October 7, 2023, a day that claimed around 1,200 Israeli lives and led to numerous captives taken back to Gaza. Since the escalation, it is reported that more than 50,810 Palestinians have lost their lives due to the Israeli military response, fueling a crisis that cries out for international intervention.

The world stands at a crossroads where decisive action is necessary to alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. Time is of the essence, and the need for global solidarity has never been more urgent.
