ST. LOUIS, MO. – After years of hard work and dedication, Western Michigan hockey has finally made history! The No. 1-ranked Broncos capped off a sensational season with their first-ever national championship, obliterating Boston University 6-2 in an electrifying game that was decades in the making.
With a stellar record of 34 wins, 7 losses, and 1 tie, the Broncos showcased their prowess on the national stage. In a thrilling final act, they delivered a powerful performance, demonstrating they were truly deserving of the top spot.
"I’m overwhelmed with emotions right now—this is everything you dream of as an athlete," said Tim Washe, a graduate forward.
A Night to Remember for Broncos
Sophomore standout Owen Michaels stole the show, netting two crucial goals, including both the fourth and sixth goals of the game. Western Michigan entered the final period leading 3-2 and wasted no time accelerating their offense with an impressive three-goal flurry.
Michaels expressed his gratitude, saying, "That goal was not about me at all; it was about our incredible team making history together." His contributions were key to an unforgettable Frozen Four performance.
Milestones and Records Set!
The Broncos’ six goals mark the highest score in a NCAA championship since 2014, leaving no doubt that they were ready to seize the moment.
Coach Pat Ferschweiler stated, "This victory puts our program on the map and paves the way for a bright future for Western Michigan hockey." It’s a remarkable milestone, as this victory marks the first national title for the school in 58 years, the last being won by the men’s cross country team in 1965.
Fast Start and Intense Action
From the opening face-off, Western Michigan asserted its dominance with a goal less than two minutes into the match. Wyatt Schingoethe’s deft touch put the Broncos up 1-0, and the frenzy continued with both teams exchanging blows in an action-packed first period.
Boston University countered, knotting the score before the Broncos regained the lead, thanks to Cole Crusberg-Roseen’s impressive goal. The relentless offense continued into the second period, leading to a commanding 3-1 lead.
Entering the final period, the Broncos showed no signs of slowing down, extending their lead through a series of spectacular plays, including a well-executed 2-on-1 opportunity that saw Ty Henricks score.
The Final Countdown
As the clock ticked down, the Broncos continued their relentless assault, with Owen Michaels scoring his second goal and sealing the championship with an empty-netter.
"This isn’t just about me; it’s about all of us—friends, teammates, and the whole Broncos community," Michaels emphasized.

The atmosphere at the Enterprise Center was electrifying, with Broncos fans roaring as history unfolded before their eyes. The team returns home to Kalamazoo as champions, marking an unforgettable chapter in Western Michigan sports.
