Rochester, N.Y. — As the holiday festivities fade, another seasonal phenomenon is sweeping through Monroe County: a sharp increase in winter illnesses. Healthcare professionals are sounding the alarm as cases continue to rise at alarming rates.

Andrew Tantalo, a physician assistant at WellNow Urgent Care, reports that the rebound of illnesses is directly linked to recent family gatherings. "After spending time together during the holidays—hugging, sharing meals, and mingling closely indoors due to the cold weather—many people are now facing the fallout of those connections as they return home and start feeling unwell," he explained.

Recent statistics reveal concerning trends in the region. As of the week ending January 4, Monroe County has seen a staggering uptick in various respiratory viruses and infections. The flu has emerged as the predominant illness among local patients. “We’re witnessing a surge in flu cases, alongside a notable increase in COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV),” Tantalo noted. Since October 1, there have been over 3,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, more than 2,500 RSV cases, and nearly 2,000 flu cases reported.

Symptoms among affected individuals are varied and encompass a range of common ailments. “We're dealing with everything from colds, sore throats, coughs, body aches, to chills. Unfortunately, these numbers are fluctuating wildly, particularly in Rochester, with no sign of slowing down," Tantalo warned.

In addition to these illnesses, another virus has made its presence known. Tantalo highlighted the dangers of norovirus, stating, “This is a particularly nasty virus. People may feel completely fine in the morning, going about their regular day, only to be struck suddenly by severe vomiting and diarrhea. It can compromise your entire gastrointestinal system almost overnight, leaving households in disarray.” He emphasized that many common household disinfectants are ineffective against norovirus, making prevention and cleanliness crucial.

As we navigate through this winter season, public health officials advise individuals to practice good hygiene, including regular handwashing and staying home when sick to limit the spread of these viruses. While vaccines for influenza and COVID-19 are available, the importance of personal responsibility cannot be overstated.

As winter illnesses continue to climb, knowing the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures is vital for safeguarding your health and the health of your loved ones. Stay informed and take care!
