Using data from an extensive sample of 81,052 middle-aged participants in the UK Biobank study, the researchers tracked various health metrics. Those who did not engage in formal exercise at all—including over 22,000 individuals who considered themselves inactive—still saw a remarkable difference. Women who averaged just 3.4 minutes of intense activity daily had a staggering 45% reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, or heart failure when compared to their sedentary counterparts.
In terms of specifics, those short bursts of activity reduced heart attack risk by an impressive 51% and heart failure risk by 67%. However, the effects were less pronounced in men, who needed to engage in 5.6 minutes of similar activity to achieve only a 16% reduction in these risks.
Regina Giblin, a senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, noted, “The evidence is mounting that any amount of movement is beneficial for lowering heart attack and stroke risks. This large-scale study serves as a powerful reminder that getting your body moving—even for just a few minutes—can significantly bolster heart health, especially for middle-aged women who may not regularly exercise.
It’s vital to note that for those who can engage in exercise more regularly, health experts still recommend aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity weekly.
