According to renowned tech journalist Mark Gurman in his PowerOn newsletter, the AirTag 2 has officially entered the manufacturing tests phase, positioning it closer to a market launch.

Design and Internal Upgrades

Visually, the new AirTag will maintain a design reminiscent of its predecessor, but significant internal upgrades are on the way. One of the most critical changes includes fortified measures that will prevent the unauthorized removal of the speaker assembly—a vital component that emits a distinctive sound. This sound plays a dual role: helping owners locate their belongings and alerting individuals to the presence of an unidentified AirTag that may be tracking them.

Addressing Misuse Concerns

Unfortunately, this clever feature has been exploited for nefarious purposes. Reports surfaced in 2022 about 'silent' AirTags being sold online after having their speakers removed, allowing stalkers to engage in unobtrusive tracking. In response to these alarming incidents, Apple introduced a 'display alert with sound' feature, which ensures that even if the speaker is tampered with, users will receive a notification on their smartphones if a suspicious AirTag is nearby.

Improving Privacy Features

Beyond anti-tampering enhancements, Gurman’s report indicates that Apple is focusing on improving privacy features, although specifics remain under wraps. Since the initial launch of AirTags, Apple has been proactive in addressing various privacy vulnerabilities, demonstrating its commitment to user safety and responsible technology.

Upgraded Tracking Capabilities

Additionally, the report points out an upgrade in tracking capabilities. The upcoming AirTag 2 is expected to feature an upgraded wireless chip, moving beyond the first-generation U1 chip that utilizes Ultra Wideband technology for Precision Finding. While the original AirTag's Bluetooth range maxes out at about 10 meters (30 feet), competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag 2 boast a staggering 120 meters. This new iteration aims to enhance its tracking range to better compete in the market.
