PSP Returns with a Vengeance for GE2025
In an exciting announcement that has stirred the political pot, the opposition Progressive Singapore Party (PSP) has confirmed its intention to contest the Marymount, Kebun Baru, and Pioneer constituencies in the upcoming General Election 2025. Party leaders say they'll unveil their candidates as the election gets closer.
Gearing Up for a Showdown
On a busy morning of April 12, PSP leaders were seen engaging with the community during walkabouts, teasing potential candidates for their campaign. Secretary-General Leong Mun Wai revealed that while the candidate for Marymount has not been finalized, they expect to make an announcement by Nomination Day.
Aiming for a Breakthrough in Marymount
Leong expressed optimism about the upcoming battle, stating that residents have shown they view PSP as a credible alternative. He emphasized, "I look forward to a breakthrough this round!" Former central executive committee member Jeffrey Khoo also voiced his dedication to the constituency, hoping for the chance to serve residents in Parliament.
Is Change on the Horizon?
Marymount, which was formed from the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC ahead of the last election, is set for an intriguing contest. In 2020, PSP's Dr. Ang Yong Guan garnered an impressive 44.96% of the vote against PAP's Ms. Gan Siow Huang. This time, with multiple parties eyeing the prize, a fierce multi-cornered fight looms.
PSP Navigates Alliances and Competition
While PSP faces tough competition, including from the People’s Alliance for Reform (PAR), which indicated plans to contest in multiple constituencies, Leong noted that discussions with PAR are still on the horizon. Ms. Gan has expressed her eagerness to compete once again, emphasizing her team’s balance of local knowledge and community connection.
Kebun Baru and Pioneer Positions in Flux
At Kebun Baru’s Mayflower Market, first vice-chairperson Hazel Poa maintained that the candidate line-up remains flexible, hinting at herself and her husband, Tony Tan, both of whom previously contested in West Coast GRC. Tan raised concerns about rising living costs and the economic landscape, pledging that PSP can do more for those feeling left behind.
A Fresh Face for the Pioneer Contest?
In the Pioneer SMC, PSP founder Tan Cheng Bock revealed they will also be contesting, with the candidate announcement expected as Nomination Day approaches. Among his team is Ms. Stephanie Tan, a law graduate and dedicated homemaker, who adds a fresh perspective with her youth and community ties.
What’s Next?
As the GE2025 campaign heats up, all eyes will be on Marymount and its neighboring constituencies. Will PSP's strategic moves pay off? With promises to address pressing local issues and a robust community engagement strategy, the stakes have never been higher for both the PSP and their opponents.
