In this groundbreaking study, the team analyzed the medical histories of over 240 individuals treated for lymphocytic scarring alopecia between 2009 and 2023. Shockingly, only 27% of these patients had been prescribed the lower doses of doxycycline, while a staggering 73% received the higher amounts.

The results were compelling—participants on lower doses of around 20 milligrams taken twice daily responded as effectively as those on higher doses of up to 100 milligrams. Researchers found no significant disparities in scalp inflammation, hair loss perception, or key metrics like hair density and diameter.

Reduction in Side Effects

Furthermore, the study revealed a noticeable reduction in side effects among those on lower doses, with only 12% reporting adverse reactions compared to 23% in the high-dose group. This highlights the tolerance and adherence benefits of lower dosing, with only 16% of low-dose patients discontinuing treatment due to gastrointestinal complaints, compared to 25% among those on higher doses.
