A Heartwarming Community Spirit
In a heartwarming display of community spirit and generosity, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited the residents of Ang Mo Kio GRC on January 12 to bring festive joy in anticipation of the Lunar New Year.
Generosity Despite the Weather
Despite heavy rain, over 400 seniors from low-income households gathered at the Teck Ghee Community Club bright and early to receive red packets filled with goodies. As part of this annual celebration, SM Lee, who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ang Mo Kio GRC, presented each attendee with a red packet containing $150 in cash along with $50 in Sheng Siong supermarket vouchers. The thoughtful packages also included nutritious items like chicken essence and traditional mandarin oranges, symbolizing good fortune.
Inclusive New Year Wishes
During the Teck Ghee Hongbao Presentation Ceremony, SM Lee delivered New Year wishes in multiple languages—English, Mandarin, and Malay—melding inclusivity with cultural appreciation. Following the ceremony, he took time to engage in conversations with several seniors, creating an intimate atmosphere of connection and kindness.
Engagement with the Community
Afterward, SM Lee dedicated nearly two hours to converse with both stall owners and attendees at the nearby 409 Ang Mo Kio Market and Food Centre. "These interactions are vital," he noted, expressing the importance of understanding and addressing the needs of the community.
Seniors Share Their Joy
Among the attendees was 76-year-old Madam Sharifah, who shared that this was her second year participating in this joyous event. "I enjoy coming to meet both new friends and old ones. It’s a great opportunity for connection," she said, reflecting on her positive experiences since moving to Ang Mo Kio four years ago. She eagerly anticipated future events organized by the Teck Ghee Citizens’ Consultative Committee aimed at supporting the elderly.
Mr. Tay, an 80-year-old resident who has been attending these festivities since 2020, echoed Madam Sharifah's sentiments. Speaking fondly in Mandarin, he expressed, "I always look forward to this occasion every year, and I eagerly await the invitation to take part.” These heartwarming interactions showcase the thriving community spirit in Teck Ghee, where every effort is made to uplift the lives of senior citizens, ensuring they feel valued and cared for.
Conclusion
As Chinese New Year approaches, such initiatives highlight the commitment of local leaders to foster joy and unity within diverse communities, reminding us all of the importance of togetherness, especially during festive seasons.
