Introduction

Singapore – Mark your calendars! The highly anticipated Punggol Coast MRT station, the latest extension on the North East Line, is set to officially open for passenger service on December 10 at 3 PM, announced the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on October 10.

Enhancing Accessibility

This addition will position Punggol Coast station as the terminal station of the North East Line, expanding the line to 17 stations across its total 22 kilometers. Nestled within the Punggol Digital District, this new stop is more than just a transit point; it promises to significantly enhance transportation accessibility for over 28,000 employees at the nearby JTC Business Park.

Students will also reap the benefits — approximately 12,000 from the Singapore Institute of Technology's (SIT) Punggol campus will find seamless access right at their doorstep. Additionally, shoppers planning to visit the much-anticipated Punggol Coast Mall, which is being unveiled in phases starting September, will appreciate the convenience the new station offers.

Location and Amenities

Strategically located beneath the district's vibrant Nexus community plaza, Punggol Coast station is designed for efficiency. It is within walking distance of the Punggol Coast bus interchange and includes over 300 bicycle parking spots, catering to the needs of eco-conscious commuters.

Construction Timeline

The journey to constructing this station began in 2018, with the facility officially handed over to rail operator SBS Transit in August. In preparation for the opening, SBS Transit has been rigorously conducting operational tests.

Increased Connectivity

Thanks to the addition of this station, more than 200,000 households will now be positioned within a mere 10-minute walk of a North East Line station, streamlining daily commutes further.

Minister's Statement

Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat celebrated the development in a recent Facebook post, emphasizing the advantages for Punggol residents traveling to central regions. This new link will notably cut down travel time — for instance, getting from Punggol North to Outram Park will take only 45 minutes via the North East Line, compared to the previous 60-minute journey involving a bus transfer at Punggol station.

Final Note

Originally expected to debut in 2023, the station's opening faced delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the new operational date is now confirmed for the end of 2024, and anticipation is building!
