NASA's Exciting New Phase in Planetary Exploration

NASA is gearing up for an exciting new phase in the exploration of potentially habitable planets with the release of a draft for the Habitable Worlds Observatory System Technology Demonstrations and Mission Architecture Studies (HWOTAS). This initiative invites industry leaders to step up and propose innovative approaches for two key areas: system-level critical technology demonstrations aimed at developing ultra-stable observatories, and mission architecture studies to guide the design of these cutting-edge observatories.

Objectives of the Initiative

The goal is clear: elevate the Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) of essential technologies through these demonstrations. By doing so, NASA aims to bridge significant technology gaps, implement architectural improvements, mitigate risks, and cut down production lead times and costs associated with the technologies vital for the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO).

Role of Mission Architecture Studies

Additionally, the mission architecture studies will play a crucial role in refining HWO's Concept Maturity Levels (CMLs). Participants will evaluate the advantages, sensitivities, and risks of various proposed mission architectures to establish the most effective strategies moving forward.

This major call for proposals coincides with the release of the NASA Research Announcement (ROSES-2024) Amendment 58, labeled NNH25ZDA003J, which opens the floor for community feedback until October 23, 2024.
