While the arrival of this powerful tool reignites the debate about AI's impact on artistic professions, it also raises a tantalizing question: Can ChatGPT actually take over the reigns from Photoshop?

Since its debut in 1987, Photoshop has remained the gold standard for photo editing among professionals and hobbyists alike. But with Adobe introducing AI features like generative fill, a new contender has emerged. I decided to test whether the new AI tool could rival this titan of image editing.

I started with a simple task: edit a photograph I took of a cow by adding another cow to the scene. I provided a straightforward prompt to ChatGPT, and within seconds, there were two cows grazing naturally side by side! The original details of the photo remained intact, and the edit looked seamless. A fantastic start!

2. Transforming My Look

Next, I aimed for a more personal challenge. I uploaded a headshot of myself and requested a transformation into a formal look with a bookcase background. While ChatGPT delivered a suit that looked sharp, the likeness wasn’t spot-on. I could recognize myself, but it would be misleading for professional use. If preserving your exact likeness is key, Photoshop still reigns supreme.

3. Elevating Travel Snaps

I love capturing beautiful views while traveling, but not every photo makes the cut. I tested ChatGPT by enhancing one of my travel snaps in the style of a glossy magazine. The results were stunning! It enhanced the colors dramatically and focused on the key elements, saving me hours of manual editing.

4. Generative Fill Magic

With AI making its mark on Photoshop, I also wanted to see if ChatGPT could replicate the Generative Fill feature. I asked it to add a campfire to a photo of a caravan. While the final image looked good, it made slight adjustments to the caravan itself—similar, but not identical. If you’re fine with artistic liberties, ChatGPT is a great option. But for exact replicas, stick with Adobe.

Lastly, I experimented with blending two images of Tokyo into a collage. ChatGPT impressed me by accurately depicting the Tokyo Sky Tree and integrating it into my Senso-ji Temple image. While it adjusted angles and perspectives, the creative combination was a success.

Final Thoughts: AI or Photoshop?

In summary, ChatGPT delivered promising results. If you’re looking for quick edits for personal use, its new image generation is worth a try. However, professional photographers needing high precision or exact likenesses will need to continue relying on traditional software for now.
