SINGAPORE: Former Singaporean midfielder Adam Swandi found himself in disbelief as he received the heartbreaking news that his professional football career had come to an abrupt end at the young age of 28.

The information from his cardiologist was both shocking and life-altering—he would no longer be able to play the sport he loved so dearly. 'At that moment, I just couldn't accept it. Surely, there had to be another way,' Adam recounted in an exclusive interview at the Lion City Sailors training facility.

A Family’s Sacrifice and Support

As the sole breadwinner in his family, Adam now faces the responsibilities of fatherhood and marriage, as he and his wife welcomed their son three years ago. 'Life has to be viewed from a broader perspective. I need to be thankful to still be here for my family,' he remarked, reflecting on the support system surrounding him.

Navigating a New Path

Initially thrown into uncertainty regarding his financial future, Adam expressed gratitude towards the Lion City Sailors for their unwavering support. 'They’ve guaranteed my contract, which alleviates a great deal of worry for me,' he explained. The club has offered him the opportunity to transition into a non-playing role, considering possibilities ranging from coaching positions to roles within the marketing department.

Despite the abrupt end to a promising career, Adam is immensely proud of what he has accomplished, including representing Singapore and sharing locker rooms with national idols like Shahril Ishak and Baihakki Khaizan.
