Liverpool sits proudly atop the Premier League, boasting an 11-point cushion with only seven matches left to play. However, beneath the surface, a sense of unease lurks among passionate fans.
Imagine offering Liverpool supporters an 11-point advantage as early as April—most would have seized it with joy. Yet, a 16-point lead just a month ago now has some questioning whether this season may mirror past disappointments.
To understand the tension, one must note that Liverpool’s sizable gap was built when Arsenal had two games in hand. After a draw against Manchester United, Arsenal found their stride with a commanding home win over Chelsea.
Recent performances have further stirred the pot. After trading wins last week, Liverpool's shocking 3-2 defeat against Fulham—to add to three losses in their last four games—has sparked nerves among the faithful.
Supporters can't help but remember previous late-season collapses, especially the agonizing near-misses from last year that still sting.
So, how safe is Liverpool's lead? Historically speaking, they find themselves in an intriguing position. Since the Premier League's inception in 1992, they've led at this point only once before—back in 2019/20, when they had a staggering 23-point lead over Manchester City.
Currently, Liverpool’s advantage ranks seventh among the biggest leads at this stage. Teams like City (2017/18 and 2020/21), Chelsea (2004/05), and Manchester United (2000/01, 2012/13) all secured titles from similar positions.
Statistically, only once has such a lead evaporated, with United squandering a five-point lead in the nail-biting finale of the 2011/12 season—a heartbreaker that allowed City to secure their first title in 44 years.
Additionally, only nine teams trailing in the standings at this stage failed to claim the championship, with four teams overcoming a deficit by winning matches in hand. High-stakes moments overshadow recent seasons, where teams like City battled back from behind to dominate.
However, Liverpool has a comforting fact: since the three-point win system was introduced over four decades ago, no team has failed to win the title while holding a lead as significant as Liverpool's.
As the final stretch approaches, challenges are expected. Nevertheless, there’s a reason Liverpool remains heavily favored to reclaim the Premier League trophy and etch another victorious season into their history.
