Response to Rising Ridership

This strategic initiative is a response to NEL's peak ridership, which averaged 588,000 passenger trips daily in early 2024—a figure close to the pre-pandemic levels of 601,000 trips recorded in 2019. The temporary suspension of the previous scheme, which began on November 25, was necessary to implement this refresh.

New Express Bus Services

To further enhance the transport experience, four new express City Direct bus services (Nos. 675, 676, 677, and 678) will commence on January 2, 2025, connecting north-east residents directly to the Central Business District during rush hours. These express services are part of the comprehensive Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme (BCEP), which also includes increased capacity for existing bus services and the introduction of new routes aimed at improving accessibility.

Focus on Robust Transit Infrastructure

Minister Chee highlighted the critical need for robust transit infrastructure, particularly in rapidly developing areas, noting that 29 bus services have already seen improvements through the BCEP. As part of ongoing efforts, a new feeder bus service (967) will launch in Woodlands on January 12, 2025, enhancing accessibility to local MRT stations and facilities such as the Woodlands Health Campus.

Extension of Local Bus Services

Another key update involves the extension of bus service 230 in Toa Payoh East to better serve the local community. These enhancements aim to respond proactively to emerging demands in both new and established neighborhoods.

Vision for Sustainable Transportation

In a broader vision for Singapore's transportation future, Mr. Chee confirmed that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is allocated $1 billion for infrastructural upgrades designed to encourage walking and cycling. This includes plans for accessible infrastructure, such as converting staircases to escalators to assist individuals with mobility challenges.

Financial Considerations

On the financial front, with new fare increases set to take effect on December 28, public transport operators will work closely with the government to ensure cost recovery does not lead to unaffordable fares for commuters. Adult fares for bus and MRT services will rise by 10 cents per ride.
