At just 18 years old, Gladys Leow faced a devastating health challenge when a lump on her neck was diagnosed as liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer formed from fat cells. Despite being benign initially, the recurrence shattered her sense of security and propelled her into a grueling battle with an aggressive illness.

The Harrowing Battle With Cancer

Liposarcoma is not only rare; it poses significant risks, as reflected in a startling 2017 report that indicated around 375,000 individuals worldwide are impacted. Between 2012 and 2021, Singapore's National Cancer Centre treated roughly 1,700 sarcoma cases, highlighting the severity of this disease.

Gladys endured a series of operations and radiation treatments from 2007 to 2014 as the cancer recurred relentlessly. From an initial diagnosis of Stage 2, it escalated to Stage 3, leaving her with a severely affected jaw structure, hindering her ability to eat and communicate.

Despair Turning to Hope

After consulting multiple surgeons, all of whom declined to take on the complexities of her case, a glimmer of hope emerged when Dr. Rahul Harshad Nagadia stepped in. As a senior consultant at the National Cancer Centre and a dental surgery expert, he was determined to tackle Gladys' unique needs with a comprehensive approach.

Collaborative Surgical Success

Dr. Nagadia enlisted a diverse team, bringing together specialists in head and neck surgery, plastic surgery, and maxillofacial surgery to devise a meticulous plan for reconstruction. Acknowledging the intricate nature of the case, he carefully communicated the uncertainties involved.

Using advanced techniques like surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion, Gladys experienced gradual but transformative changes. Remarkably, the reconstruction involved harvesting bone from her fibula and utilizing a double-barrel technique to restore her jaw's natural proportions.

To replace lost gums, muscle tissue from her calf was delicately transferred while thigh tissue was used to reconstruct her mouth's soft tissue. This complex process was made safer and more effective through 3D imaging and modeling, allowing for a clearer visualization of the surgical undertakings.

Between January 2023 and March 2024, Gladys underwent multiple surgeries aimed at restoring her jaw functionality, and she is continuing treatment to realign her teeth. Through every harrowing moment, the unwavering support from her family and community fortified her resolve.

Her journey culminated in recognition as one of 28 recipients of the Inspirational Patient of the Year Award in 2024, celebrating her indomitable spirit amidst adversity.
